About the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts were established on January 23, 1953 and are based in Indianapolis, Indiana. They compete in the NFL as a member club of the league’s AFC South Division. The Colts played their home games at the RCA Dome from 1984 – 2007, and started playing their home games at the Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008. The Colts joined the NFL in 1953, they are one of the three teams in the NFL to join the teams in the AFL to from the American Football Conference after the 1970 merger.
In 1947 a professional football team was established in Baltimore and were known as the Baltimore Colts. The team first played in the All-America Football Conference, the team joined the NFL three years later as part of the peace agreement between the NFL and the AAFC. Unfortunately, the franchise was disbanded after the 1950 season. In 1953, a new NFL franchise was established in Baltimore and the team was nicknamed the Colts.
Weeb Ewbank became the head coach for the Colts in 1954. Ewbank began a steady building program which helps his team gain a .500 winning percentage in 1957. For the next 14 years, the Colts didn’t have another losing season. The Colts won NFL Championships in 1958, 1959, and 1968 with the help of young quarterback Johnny Unitas and future Pro Football Hall of Famers Lenny Moore, Gino Marchetti, Jim Parker, Artie Donovan, and Raymond Berrie.
In 1998 quarterback Peyton Manning joined the Colts and with his leadership, the team became one of the most dominant team in the league. In 2006, Manning led the Colts to get their first Super Bowl victory in 36 seasons.

1953 – The Colts’ helmets were white with a blue stripe.
1954 – 1955 – The Colts wore blue helmets with a white stripe and a pair of horseshoe at the rear of the helmet.
1956 – The Colts wore white helmets with blue stripes and a pair of horseshoe at the rear.
1957 – The horseshoes on the Colts’ helmets were placed at each side of the helmet. The Colts wore blue jerseys with white shoulder stripes and white jerseys with blue shoulder stripes. They also wore white pants with blue stripes down the sides.
1982 – 1986 – The Colts changed the color of their pants from white to gray. The gray pants featured a horseshoe placed on the top of the sides and the player’s number was placed inside the horseshoe.
1995 – During their first three games, the Colts wore white jerseys with blue pants, after this they returned to white and blue jerseys with white pants.
2004 – The Colts changed their blue face masks to gray, they changed their colors from royal blue to speed blue, and they added two white stripes to their uniform socks.
2006 – The two white stripes were removed from the socks.
