About the New York Jets
Founded on August 14, 1959, the New York Jets are a professional American football team based in the New York Metropolitan area. The Jets were originally known as the Titans of New York and are a member club of the American Football League. The franchise joined the NFL in 1970 after the AFL-NFL merger.
The team began play at the Polo Grounds in 1960, they moved to Shea Stadium in 1964, and in 1984, they moved to the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
In 1968, the Jets appeared in the playoffs for the very first time and went on to compete in Super Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts where they won. The Jets have advanced in the playoffs 13 times since the 1968, and four times in the AFC Championship Game.
Team Facts
Rivalries
Buffalo Bills
The Jets and the Bills are both charter members of the American Football League and both teams represent the same state, New York. Both of these teams also play in the same division (AFC East), and play two scheduled games each season.
New England Patriots
The Jets and the Patriots both joined the American Football League in 1960 and both teams play in the AFC East. They played each other at least twice a year since their inception.
In the 1966 playoff game, the Jets defeated the Patriots by a score of 38-28 at the Shea Stadium, eliminating the Patriots’ hopes of appearing in Super Bowl I. In 1985, during the wild card round, the Patriots defeated the Jets by a score of 26-14. The Patriots went on to Super Bowl XX and were defeated by the Bears.
In 1997, Bill Parcells resigned as head coach for the Patriots to accept the same position with the Jets, and New York signed Pro Bowl running back Curtis Martin from New England the following year. Parcells decided to resign as head coach during his third year, and the following day his assistant, Bill Belichick, resigned to become New England’s head coach.
In 2011, the Jets defeated the Patriots by a score of 28-21 in a Divisional Round playoff game. The team went on to the AFC Championship Game, but unfortunately, they were defeated by the Steelers. The Patriots currently lead the series 62-54-1.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins and the Jets both play in AFC East Division, they play two scheduled games each season. These two teams have been rivals since Dolphins’ inception in 1966. The Jets currently lead the series 54-50-1.
