The Texas Rangers franchise was established in 1961 as the Washington Senators, an expansion team awarded to Washington, D.C., after the city's first American League ballclub, the original Washington Senators, moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. After the 1971 season, the new Senators moved to Arlington, Texas, and debuted as the Rangers the following spring.

The Texas Rangers Baseball Club has made eight appearances in the MLB postseason, seven following division championships in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016 and as a wild card team in 2012. In 2010, the Rangers advanced past the Division Series for the first time, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays. Texas then brought home their first American League pennant after beating the New York Yankees in six games. In the 2010 World Series, the franchise's first, the Rangers fell to the San Francisco Giants in five games. They repeated as American League champions the following year, then lost the 2011 World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

Some Trivia about the Texas Rangers

    • Following the 1971 season, Washington Senators (formed in 1961) owner Bob Short moved the team from Washington D.C. to Texas. During the final Washington Senators game, fans stormed the field in protest, resulting in the Senators forfeiting the game.
    • Bobby Shantz won every pitching Gold Glove from 1957-1964, and was the AL MVP in 1952.
    • Before becoming the Rangers, the franchise was the Washington Senators beginning in 1961. In 1961 the Senators was managed by Mickey Vernon. The team really never went anywhere for the next decade, so the team was sold and moved.
    • Bob Short, the same owner who moved basketball’s Lakers from Minneapolis to Los Angeles is the same man who moved the Washington Senators to Arlington where the team would become known as the Texas Rangers.
    • Jeff Burroughs was the first Texas Rangers player to win the AL MVP in 1974.
    • Alex Rodriguez smacked an astounding 57 home runs in 2002, along with batting .300 and having 187 hits. In his 9th season in the Majors, he earned his first Gold Glove Award at shortstop, and was 2nd in the American League MVP voting.
