The Pittsburgh Steelers are one the most successful franchises in the NFL history. The team was founded on July 8, 1933 by Art Rooney and was known that time as the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Steelers have been competing in the NFL for 84 years and during these years, they have set numerous records including, winning six Super Bowl titles (more than any NFL team), they have hosted eleven conference championship games (more than any NFL team), they have won 8 AFC championships, they have played 15 conference championship games, and they have appeared in the Super Bowl 8 times. Their recent Super Bowl Appearance was in Super Bowl XLV and unfortunately they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers by the score of 31-25.

Aside from achieving these records, the Steelers have also gained a large fanbase and they have numerous unofficial fan clubs in numerous cities throughout the country. On game days, fans usually meet in bars or taverns to show their support, although this practice is common to other NFL teams, the “Steeler bars” are more visible than others.

There is no question about how dedicated the Steelers fans are, however even the most dedicated fan may not know some facts about the Steelers, so here are some fun facts about your beloved team.

    • During their 84 years of existence, the Pittsburgh Steelers have used 4 different names these are, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, “Steagles”, and “Card-Pitt”. The team began as the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in 1940 owner Art Rooney changed the name to the Steelers. In 1943, they were merged with the Philadelphia Eagles and became the “Steagles”. These two teams were forced to merge because they had lost many players to military service during the 2nd World War. In 1944, the Steelers were merged with the cardinals and they became the “Card-Pitt”.
    • The Steelers is one of a few teams that have never retired a player’s number. Though there are numbers that are not handed out to new players each season, these are: #12 (Terry Bradshaw), #31 (Donnie Shell), #32 (Franco Harris), #47 (Mel Blount), #52 (Mike Webster), #58 (Jack Lambert), #59 (Jack Ham), #70 (Ernie Stautner), and #75 (Joe Greene).
    • Did you know that the Steelers used to have cheerleaders? Yes, they are one of the NFL’s first cheerleading teams. The Steelerettes, cheered for the team from 1961-1970.
    • The Steelers steelmark logo was only applied on the right side of the helmet because the Steelers were not sure how the logo would look like on their helmets, especially that their helmets are solid gold. Even though they have changed their helmet color to black, they decided to just put the logo on one side of the helmet this is because of the interest generated by the logo’s uniqueness.

Don’t forget to wear your Officially Licensed Pittsburgh Steelers paracord bracelet, while cheering Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell and the rest of the Steelers during the next season!
