About the New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints were founded in 1966 by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans and they compete in the NFL as a member team of the league’s NFC South Division. The Saints are based in New Orleans, Louisiana and the play their home games in Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The New Orleans Saints franchise was officially approved by the NFL on November 1, 1966. November 1 is All Saints’ Day in the Catholic Church and as a nod to the day and because New Orleans has a large Catholic population, team owner John Mecom chose the name “Saints” for the team. The nickname “Saints” was also one of the favorites submitted in a name-the-team contest sponsored by the New Orleans States-Items. The song “When the Saints Go Marching In” which is strongly associated with New Orleans is the team’s fight song and is often sung by fans at games.
The Saints were barely competitive for most of their first 20 years in the league, and they only got to .500 twice. Their first-ever winning season was in 1987, they finished 12-3 and they qualified for the NFL playoffs – their very first playoffs appearance in franchise history. They played against the Minnesota Vikings, but unfortunately they lost the game with a score of 44-10. During the 1988 season, the Saints finished with a record of 10-6. During the 2000 season, the Saints got their first-ever playoff win when they defeated the St. Louis Rams with a score of 31-28.
During the 2009 season, the Saints won 13 games, a franchise record. They also qualified for Super Bowl XLIV and they defeated the Indianapolis Colts with a score of 31-17. This is the only Super Bowl Championship that the Saints won and the only Super Bowl that they have appeared in.
Logo History
The New Orleans Saints logo is a fleur-de-lis. The fleur-de-lis which means, “flower of the lily” is a symbol of the city of New Orleans. It is also a part of the city’s heritage and is often associated with the Royal Family of France.
From 1967 through 1999, the Saints used the fleur-de-lis logo which was originally in black. The logo gives fans an iconic symbol that is tied to the city’s history.
After over 30 years, the Saints made some changes with the logo. They changed the color of the logo from black to gold and made the outline black. The Saints have been using this logo since 2000.
