Breast cancer is the scourge of women. It is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer for women all over the world. In the United States, it is known that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. But if you think that only women should worry about breast cancer, think again. Men are also susceptible – although rarely. Statistics show that every year, 2600 American men get diagnosed with breast cancer.
Cancer in any form is a scary disease. But a person diagnosed with cancer should never have to feel that all hope is lost. There are many resources available for patients as well as their caregivers and all one must do is know where to find them.
The Colorado Breast Cancer Resources Directory caters both to patients and care providers in Colorado.
The Directory is a huge knowledgebase of resources like support groups, help in managing treatment costs, products and services, alternative medicine, genetic counseling, breast cancer screening, and many others.
For many patients, especially the underinsured or uninsured, managing cost is no doubt going to be the problem that can be as big as the illness itself. The directory provides sources where one can get financial assistance and help with insurance issues. Resource for support groups in all parts of Colorado is also available and patients can search for groups nearest them. Knowing that there are people out there who are willing to offer support is a really good way to rekindle one’s sense of hope.
With all these information in one place, coping and dealing with breast cancer, no matter what stage a patient is in, can become a lot easier. The reduction in stress can also help significantly improve the patient’s outlook in life and in getting treatment.
The online directory is simple to navigate and there is an option to save searches to view them again later. It is updated with new resources added throughout the year. The printed version is available at no cost through the Colorado Dept. of Public Health & Environment's Resource Center. Both the printed and online version of the Resources Directory Database are available in English and Spanish languages.
The Colorado Breast Cancer Resources Directory was created by the Breast Cancer Task Force of the Colorado Cancer Coalition which is an all-volunteer organization and serves as the network for dedicated cancer-related organizations and caregivers in Colorado. The Breast Cancer Task Force advocates for the improvement of the quality of care provided to patients and leads and coordinates breast cancer services statewide.
Donations are welcome and much appreciated. Not only will donating help keep the directory available at no cost, it will also help lower mortality from cancers by expanding and improving existing screening, treatment and quality of life services throughout Colorado.
The Colorado Cancer Coalition and the Colorado Breast Cancer Task Force has a competitive grant program that is supported by voluntary donations. To learn more about this organization or to make a donation, click here.
For the month of October, Handmade By Heroes is donating 20% of all sales from our new Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelet.
