    About the Houston Texans

The Houston Texans were established on October 6, 1999. They compete in the NFL as a member club of the AFC South division. The Texans’ first season in the NFL was in 2002, making them the youngest franchise competing in the league.  The Texans replaced the Houston Oilers when the Oilers moved to Nashville, Tennessee and are now known as the Tennessee Titans.

The Texans struggled in their early seasons however the team began to improve when Gary Kubiak became their head coach in 2006. In 2007 and 2008, the team finished with a .500 season (8-8) and in 2009, they almost advanced in the playoffs with a 9-7 results. In 2010, the Texans started off strong with a 4-2 record, but during the second half of the season the Texans didn’t play well, winning only 2 games and losing 8, finishing with a record of 6-10.

In 2011, the Texans hired Wade Phillips (the former head coach of the Dallas cowboys), as their defensive coordinator. With their improved defense, the Texans finished 10-6 and they have won their very first AFC South championship and getting a spot in the playoffs (their very first playoffs appearance in franchise history). The Texans beat the Bengals in the first round of the 2011-2012 NFL playoffs with a score of 31-10, but they lost by the Ravens in the semifinals with a score of 20-13.

After getting their very first AFC South championship in 2011, the Texans have gone on to win more AFC South championships in 2012, 2015, and 2016. The Texans play their home games at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

    Logo History

The Houston Texans’ logo features a head of a bull, split in such a way to resemble the flag of Texas and the state of Texas, and a lone star which represents the eye of the bull. The five points of the star in the logo represents pride, courage, strength, tradition, and independence. The colors of the logo are “Deep Steel Blue”, “Battle Red”, and “Liberty White”, as described by team owner Bob McNair.

    Team Name

The Houston NFL 2002 together with the NFL Properties has conducted a research on what would be the nickname for the team. Stallions, Bobcats, Texans, Wildcatters, and Apollos are the top five choices for the team name. They have also conducted an online survey about the name which generated more than 65,000 responses in only seven days. The name for the team was finally announced on September 6, 2000 before thousands at a downtown rally in Houston, and the team was officially known as the Houston Texans.

The nickname “Texans” was previously used by other teams such as the now-defunct Canadian Football League franchise in San Antonio; the name was also used by a former World Football League franchise in Houston, which is now known as the Shreveport Steamer after relocating in Louisiana; the name was also used by a former NFL team the Dallas Texans, which played in the league in the 1952 season; another team who used the nickname “Texans” is the Dallas Texans of the AFL (the AFL Texans have no connection with the earlier NFL Texans) which is now known as the Kansas City Chiefs.

Before the team could use the nickname “Texans”, Bob McNair, the team owner, have to make a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs’ owner Lamar Hunt.
