Here’s a Bit of a History About the Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs were founded in 1960 by businessman Lamar Hunt and were first known as the Dallas Texans (they are not associated with Dallas Texans, a team in the NFL that only played for one season in 1952), they relocated in Kansas City in 1963. In 1970, the Kansas City Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger.
The Chiefs’ victory against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV made them the second AFL team to defeat an NFL team in an AFL-NFL World Championship Game. All in all, the Chiefs have won three AFL Championships. Their victory against the Vikings remains to be their last championship game victory and appearance. The Chiefs were the second team and the first AFL team to appear in a championship game in two different decades.
In 2015, during the AFC Wild-Card playoff game, the Kansas City Chiefs have earned their first NFL playoff win in 23 seasons when they defeated the Houston Texans in a score of 30-0. The Chiefs play in and headquartered in Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
About the Fans
Fans of the Kansas City Chiefs are said to be the most loyal fans in the NFL. They have had the second highest appearance average in the last decade, averaging 77,300 fans in attendance per game from 1996-2006. The Chiefs have an official fan club called the Chiefs Kingdom. Members of the fan club were given opportunities to VIP treatments and ticket priority benefits.
Fans of the Chiefs currently hold the world record for the loudest roar at a sports stadium after an almost deafening roar of 142.2 decibels at the Arrowhead Stadium on September 29, 2014. The Chiefs were playing against the New England Patriots which they defeated with a score of 41-14.
Logo History
Dallas Texans
The Kansas City Chiefs were formerly known as the Dallas Texans and their logo featured a polished football toting gunslinger with the state of Texas in red as the background. This design was created by cartoonist Bob Taylor.
Kansas City Chiefs
The franchise changed their logo when they moved to Kansas City in 1963. Bob Taylor created a new logo which is similar to his original design. The new logo featured a running Native American figure holding the pigskin and a tomahawk with the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma in the background. The Chiefs used this logo from 1963-1971.
The Chiefs changed their logo in 1972, the new logo is an arrowhead design sketched by Lamar Hunt. The inspiration for the new logo design which was sketched by Hunt on a napkin was the San Francisco 49ers’ logo. The 49ers logo is an interlocking “SF” inside an oval but, the Chiefs logo is an interlocking “KC” inside a white arrowhead surrounded by a thick chipped looking black border.
