About the Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins were established in 1965 and they are based in the Miami metropolitan area. The team was founded by Joe Robbie (an attorney-politician) and Danny Thomas (an actor-comedian). They compete in the NFL as a member team of the league’s AFC East Division. The Dolphins are the oldest professional sports team in Florida; they are the only team in the AFC East Division that was not a charter member of the AFL.
The Dolphins are the ninth member of the American Football League and they play their first season in 1966. Six years later, they became the only team in the NFL to record a perfect season. In 1972, they finished the season with a perfect record of 17-0-0. During the 1972 season, the Dolphins won the AFC Eastern division and AFC championships. They defeated the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII, with a score of 14-7.
Since winning the Super Bowl VII, the Dolphins became the first team to appear in three consecutive Super Bowls and the second team to win back-to-back championships. The team also appeared in Super Bowl VI (against the Dallas Cowboys, 24-3), Super Bowl XVII (against the Washington Redskins, 27-17), and Super Bowl XIX (against the San Francisco 49ers, 38-16), losing all three of the games.
The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida and are headquartered in Davie, Florida.
Team Facts
Dolphins’ Logo History
The Dolphins’ original logo features a sunburst with a leaping dolphin wearing a football helmet with the capital letter “M” on it. The head of the dolphin was near the center of the sunburst and its tail was outside the sunburst.
The leaping dolphin was centered on the sunburst with its head and tail outside of the sunburst.
In 1989 the team changed the colors of the logo to darker aqua and orange, they also made the helmet bolder and the sunburst smaller.
In 1997, the team revised their logo. They made the dolphin looked proportionally larger and more three-dimensional in effect. They added more depth in the dolphin and added navy as the trim color. They have also removed the hashmarks around the perimeter of the sunburst.
The new logo features a dolphin swimming in front of the sunburst. The new logo also features the colors white, aqua green, and orange. The dolphin was made more artistic and vague, and the helmet was removed too. The new team logo shows the team’s desire for “the dolphin to be in a more powerful and ascending position”.
