    About the Arizona Cardinals

    The Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club. They are based in the Phoenix Metropolitan area and they compete in the NFL as a member of the league’s NFC West division. The team play their home games at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

    The Cardinals were established in Chicago in 1898 and they joined the NFL as a charter member on September 1920. They are one of the two charter member franchise in the NFL that is still in operation since the founding of the league, they are also the oldest continuously run professional football team in the U.S.

    In 1960 the Cardinals moved to St. Louis and played there through 1987. The team then moved to Tempe, Arizona in 1988 and they played their home games at the Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium for 18 years. In 2006, the team started playing their home games at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

    • The Cardinals’ first season in the NFL was in 1920, and they were known as the Chicago Cardinals.
    • In 1944 the Steelers and the Cardinals merged due to the ramification of World War II, they’re known as the “CARD-PITT”, and informally known as the “Car-Pitts” or “Carpets”. Both teams went solo again the following season.
    • In 1960 the Cardinals moved to St. Louis and were known as the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1988 the team moved to Phoenix and changed their name to Phoenix Cardinals, in 1994 they changed their name to Arizona Cardinals.
    • The Cardinal franchise has been in the Bidwell family since 1932.
    • Quarterback Jim Hart played with the St. Louis Cardinals for 18 seasons, he played his final season with the Washington Redskins in 1984.
    • The Cardinals won two NFL Championships – 1925 and 1947, two NFL Western Conference Championships – 1947 and 1948, two NFC Eastern Division Championships – 1974 and 1975, three NFC West Division Championships – 2008, 2009, and 2016, and they have won the NFC Championship in 2008.
    • At the end of the 2016 season the Cardinals have an all-time record of 549-741-40.

    Logo History

    1920 – 1943 (Chicago Cardinals)

    The logo for the Chicago Cardinals featured an interlocking “CC”. The logo has a wishbone “C” and a regular “C” in red.

    1944 (Chicago Cardinals/Pittsburgh Steelers)

    The Steelers and the Chicago Cardinals merged in 1944 and were known as “Card-Pitt”, their logo featured the wordmark “CARD-PITT” in red.

    1947 – 1959 (Chicago Cardinals)

    The new logo for the Cardinals featured a brown and black cardinal and a white football with black outline. The cardinal was perched on the stitches of the football.

    1960 – 1969 (St. Louis Cardinals)

    The Cardinals changed their logo in 1960 and it featured a red muscled cardinal in football uniform, carrying a football and running past the St. Louis Arch.

    1970 – 2004

    The Cardinals introduced a new logo in 1970 which featured the head of a cardinal, it has a gold beak, a faded maroon head, and a shade of black around the eye going down the neck.

    2005 - Present

    In 1988 the Cardinals made a slight changes in their logo when they moved to Phoenix. Another slight changes were made in the logo in 1994, this is also the time when the Phoenix Cardinals became the Arizona Cardinals.

    In 2005 the Cardinals made some major changes in their logo. The beak of the cardinal was changed from gold to yellow, the color of the head was updated to a light cardinal red and heavier black outline was added to make the bird look more aggressive.
